In this CSTF-aligned course, you will find information on the safe procedures relating to the resuscitation of adults, from early recognition to the ABCDE assessment, to non-technical skills and post-resuscitation care.

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of early recognition of the seriously ill or deteriorating patient
  • Outline the rationale for Early Warning Scores (EWS)
  • Define and describe the ABCDE assessment approach
  • Describe potential interventions required to treat the deteriorating patient or patient in cardiac arrest
  • Outline the principles for confirmation of cardiac arrest and initiating high-quality CPR including safe defibrillation
  • Describe the key aspects of post-resuscitation care
  • Explain the importance of non-technical skills in emergency situations.

This course meets the learning outcomes for Resuscitation - Level 3 – Adult Immediate Life Support in the Skills for Health Core Skills Mandatory Training Framework.

The learner will:

  • be able to recognise the seriously ill adult and initiate appropriate interventions to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest
  • understand and be able to apply the ABCDE approach
  • know how to manage and co-ordinate roles and responsibilities within the team in responding to emergency situations until the arrival of a resuscitation team or more experienced assistance
  • be able to participate as a member of the resuscitation team
  • be able to provide initial post resuscitation care until the arrival of the resuscitation team or more experienced assistance.
